Venus With the Kastles in Charleston, SC!!!

The Washington Kastles announced today that Venus Williams will be joining the Washington Kastles in Charleston, SC for WTT Finals Weekend.  WTT Finals Weekend starts with the Western Conference Championship on Friday, September 14, 2012, then the Eastern Conference Championship on Saturday, September 15, 2012 and then the WTT Championship match on Sunday, September 16, 2012.

This is the site where the Washington Kastles won the 2011 WTT Championship and hopefully it’s just as good a location this year.  Venus playing for the Kastles is a big boost and will hopefully be a recipe for another Eastern Conference title and then another WTT Title to bring the streak to 32 matches in a row.

Refuse to Lose -Let’s Go Kastles!!!

A Delightful “Il Divo” Evening

Well, I just spent a fantastic evening seeing Il Divo in concert at Wolf Trap Filene Center for The Performing Arts with my brother.

The Simon Cowell created quartet of Sebastian, Urs, David and Carlos inspired by The Three Tenors and Andrea Bocelli were absolutely fanstastic in concert.  My brother was introduced to Il Divo when they performed at DAR Constitution Hall about 6 years ago.  When Il Divo announced their US tour plans, announced special blocks of tickets offered only to members of  I put in a request to be invited to buy tickets to their concert at Wolf Trap and sure enough, I was notified as to the date and time to go to the website and buy advance tickets only available through  That was on March 21, about 4.5 months in advance.  I was basically buying blind – I put in the order for tickets and they would notify me of the seats several days later.

Lo and behold, I ended up with tickets in Row A center stage so we were immediately behind the orchaestra pit about 20 feet from the stage.  The seats were amazing and the acoustics were far better at Wolf Trap than at DAR Constitution Hall.  It was quite pleasant to be sitting in the audience and being able to see all four performers at the same time without having to move my head from side to side.  It definitely adds something to the performance when the performers are so close you can easily see their faces.

It was quite unusual.  They started the concert at 8:05 and continued singing until around 9:30 PM and then they had a 15 minute intermission.  They started back up at 9:45 PM and finished the concert at 10:30 PM.  So it was 2 hours and 10 minutes of music.  And let me tell you, this group has gotten better with time.  Their personalities shone through and they have become much more polished and mature in both their music and their audience interaction.  Even singing Amazing Grace a-capella and doing it excellently.

The other thing is it’s great to see a group in concert that are as good in concert (or maybe better) as on their records.

It was a fantastic concert and hopefully Il Divo will come back to Wolf Trap.

Williams/Williams – Our Golden Girls

They did it again!!!  Our own Washington Kastles sister team take their third gold medal in Womens Doubles in three attempts at Wimbledon.

It’s really cool to know that Venus and Serena are the only players in tennis history to have four gold medals.  Venus with the Womens Singles gold in 2000 and Doubles golds in 2000, 2008 and 2012 and Serena with the Womens Singles gold in 2012 and Doubles golds in 2000, 2008 and 2012.

We are proud of our “home town” girls – go Kastles!!!

Serena – The Golden Girl – Bryan/Bryan – The Golden Boys

Thank goodness the story had the ending I wanted.  Serena Williams dismantled Maria Sharipova in the Womens Singles Final 6-0, 6-1 in the Olympic Tennis Tournament at Wimbledon to capture the Career Golden Slam – only the second woman to do so.  That puts her in good company since the only other player to do that is Steffi Graf.  The only men to have a Career Golden Slam are Rafael Nadal and Andre Agassi.

Serena already had the Career Golden Slam in Womens Doubles along with her sister and fellow Washington Kastle Venus Williams.  Serena and Venus accomplished that in 2001 when they won the Austrailian Open Womens Doubles title.  They go for their third Womens Doubles gold medal tomorrow against Hlavackova and Hradecka of the Czech Republic.  They are the only Womens Doubles pair to hold a Career Golden Slam.

Bob and Mike Bryan also got the elusive Olympic Gold Medal and the Career Golden Slam in Mens Doubles by defeating Llodra/Tsonga of France.  They are only the second Mens Doubles pair to get a Career Golden Slam, the others being Todd Woodbridge and Mark Woodforde who won Mens Doubles at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta and then won the French Open Mens Doubles title in 2000.

So, for Sunday, August 4, 2012 good luck wishes go out to Venus and Serena on their appearance in the Womens Doubles Final.  Also wishes to Lisa Raymond and Lizel Huber in their quest for a bronze medal in Womens Doubles against Kirilenko/Petrova and to Lisa Raymond and Mike Bryan in their quest for a bronze medal in Mixed Doubles against Lisicki and Kass of Germany.
