Pretty Good For Tennis – September 8, 2013 – Serena Wins US Open and Leander Claims US Open Mens Doubles Title

Well, it was a pretty good day for tennis and especially for Washington Kastles tennis fans.

Leander Paes was paired with Radek Stepanek and they defeated Alexander Peya and Bruno Soares 6-1, 6-3 in the Men’s US Open Men’s Doubles Final on Sunday.  It is Leander’s 14th grand slam title (8 Men’s Doubles and 6 Mixed Doubles).  Leander has grand slam titles in three decades and is the oldest man to win Men’s Doubles in the modern era.

Then two Kastles faced one another in the Women’s Final late afternoon – defending champion and world number one Serena Williams (2008-2011 Kastles) and world number two Victoria Azarenka (2010 Kastles).  Serena won the first set 7-5 and then went up 4-1 in the second set.  Victoria fought back to break Serena twice and force a tiebreak.  Serena had served for the set twice and was broken both times.  Vika won the tiebreak 8-6 to force a third set.  It was the first set that Serena had lost during the entire tournament.  Serena ended up breaking Vika’s serve twice in the third set and did not face any break points in that set. Serena rolled to the win in the third set 6-1.

It is Serena’s 17th grand slam singles title and she is now one shy of tying Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova who both have 18 grand slam singles titles.  Steffie Graf has 22 singles grand slam titles.

Serena had won the Emirates US Open Series so the bonus kicked in – prize money for Serena was 2.6 million dollars plus a 1 million dollar bonus for a total of $3.6 million.  Vika won $1.3 million dollars plus $250k bonus for finishing second in the Emirates US Open Series.

Congratulations Serena – Luv Ya!!!
