Leander Did OK at Citi Open and
Serena Rocked at Stanford

Well, Leander partnered with Sam Groth in Men’s Doubles at the Citi Open and made it the finals.  I understand that Mark Ein was the catalyst to get these two to play together and the pairing was pretty darn good.  Steve Johnson and Sam Querrey took out Bob and Mike Bryan in the Quarterfinals and then Sam and Leander took out Steve and Sam in the Semis.  Runner up is not so bad when it’s your first time playing together.

On the other coast, Serena Williams faced Angelique Kerber in the final of the Bank of the West tournament at Stanford University in Palo Alto, CA.  Kerber went up two breaks on Serena and was leading 5-1.  As I have said on many occasions, don’t ever count a Williams sister out.  A staff member of NBC Sports at the World Team Tennis Finals told the Sacramento Capitals to get ready for the King Trophy presentation when Venus Williams down 2-0 to Coco Vandeweghe in the final set tiebreak.  The winner of the tiebreak would win the Championship for their team.  I tapped the gentleman on his shoulder and he turned around.  I looked at him and said “a little premature isn’t it?  DON’T EVER COUNT A WILLIAMS SISTER OUT UNTIL THE FINAL POINT.  Sure enough, Venus won the tiebreak 5-4.  He turned around to me and said – “you were right”.  Serena then reeled off 5 games in a row getting both service breaks back and then went into the tiebreak against Kerber.  Serena won the tiebreak 7-1 and was on a roll.  She broke Kerber in her first service game of the second set and never looked back.

Serena wins the Bank of the West Classic 7-6, 6-3.

I Am Truly Impressed and Pleased
Venus Takes Out Vika at Stanford

I must honestly say that I was pleased that Venus is playing as well as she is in Stanford, CA at the Bank of West Classic.  Taking out Victoria Asarenka by a score of 6-4, 7-6 is pretty darn good.  As a matter of fact, Venus is 4-0 against Victoria.
