Another Slam Title for Kastle Martina Hingis

Sania Mirza and Washington Kastles’ own Martina Hingis won the 2016 Australian Open Women’s Doubles Championship in Melbourne 7-6, 6-3 over Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka.

Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis both hold the ranking of #1 in Women’s Doubles for the WTA.  Mirza and Hingis both have over 11,000 points and that number will grow when the points for the Australian Open become part of the rankings.  The #3 ranked player has 6990 points and that gap will be even bigger because the doubles players ranked #3 and #4 won the Australian Open last year and did not play together this year.  Bethanie Matek-Sands lost in the second round this year.

Mark Ein – if you can pull a miracle and get Sania Mirza to play for the Kastles alongside Martina it would be fabulous!!!

Now I await the Women’s Final where I hope, hope, hope that Serena Williams will beat Angelique Kerber for he 22 Major title to tie Steffi Graf.

Enjoying the Aussie Open Despite the “Blizzard of ’16”

Well the weather sucks right now.  We are being ravaged by winter storm Jonas with 24″ to 30″ of snow expected to the west of DC.

However, the bright thing in all of this is I get to watch a LOT of Australian Open tennis with Serena Williams playing in top form and the team of Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis playing doubles as the #1 seed and the #1 ranking by the WTA.

It was nice to see Sania and Martina win their second round match 6-2, 6-3.

However, the remarkable thing was Serena in her match against the young Russian Kasatkina.  Serena served 6 aces to 0 for her opponent.  She won the match 6-1, 6-1 and only served 30 points with 24 first serves.  Not only did she have a first serve percentage of 80% but she won 96% of her first serve points.  She only lost one point on a first serve and only lost one point on a second serve.  She came to net 10 times and won all 10 points. She had 27 winners and only 8 unforced errors. And out of the 73 points in the entire match, Serena won 55 of them.

I’m hoping she goes all the way to tie Steffi.
